Extreme three-quarter “Red Yar” and the Russian national team commented on the successful start of their team in the new season of the PARI Championship of Russia, shared their opinion on the reform of the spring-autumn system and referred to the failures of Yenisei-STM.
— How do you find the start of the Krasny Yar season?
“We are indeed off to a great start. Maybe there was a good pre-season, maybe a selection of quality players this summer. In any case, all factors developed successfully. We have a good atmosphere in the team, everyone wants to win. We give the best in training and matches, everything is going well.
– Did you feel like the old season continued, given that there was only a month between them?
“I didn’t take a vacation at all. After the end of the season, we went to the national team, came back and five days later training started. The guys in the team have different feelings. The Africans even had time to go home. Although the transfers are different, the teams look different. The same Dynamo, for example. Before, they were underestimated, but now it’s a team that can beat the champions.
– The season is going well for you. Already 4 attempts in three matches and four somersaults. Are you planning new celebrations?
– As for me, this is the easiest celebration – doing somersaults. Maybe I’ll come up with something else later. Until I got sick of it, and others liked it (laughs). Was it scary doing somersaults in Krasnoyarsk in the rain? Everything is fine, the rain doesn’t bother me, but I’m in boots!
– Tell us a little about the team’s coaching tandem – Nikolaychuk-Beyers. Who is responsible for what?
– I would say that the head coach is Igor Nikolaychuk. And Ulrich Beyers is more technical, he gives exercises, we do sequences and combinations together. In general, the two train. I don’t know how decisions are made, who’s the principal and who’s the deputy, I’m not in their area of responsibility and I’m not particularly interested.
– Isn’t it Denis Tsurupa who translates Beyers in training?
– It happens (laughs). Many of us speak English so that’s not a problem.
What do you think of the transition to the new spring-autumn system? What will be difficult this season?
– As far as I know, there will be playoffs up to two wins. This fact confuses me a little, it seems to me that there will be too many matches. What’s the point of fighting for first place in the regular season if you can become champion from eighth place? I understand that when the games are one win away, you have the advantage of playing at home, in addition to having a weaker opponent in the regular season. Thus, you will play both at home and away. There will be a lot of playoff games. It seems to me that it was possible to complete the PARI Championship of Russia this fall. It was possible to play a round and go straight to the playoffs. And next spring we would start a new PARI Russia Championship. I agree with that, the Russian Rugby Federation, of course, has its own plans and deadlines, but I’m not aware of all the internal issues.
— Krasny Yar has two games ahead of him against Lokomotiv. Thinking about what is most important?
– The cup match will be more important. For us this year, every game will be important, really. We are not relaxing anywhere, we will fight for all the points. This season will not be such that we put together a non-optimal team for a game. We want to win every game. In terms of importance, of course, the semi-finals of the Russian PARI Cup are higher. In addition, we are doing well according to the schedule that we miss the 4th round of the PARI Russian Championship, and we will have time to prepare for this match. Even if Yenisei-STM had remained in the PARI Russian Cup, our priorities would not have changed.
— I can’t help but ask about Yenisei-STM. Surely keep an eye on the ‘heavy machine’, what’s been going on with the team in recent months?
– I think every team has a time when the team needs to rejuvenate, to change its spine. When this process begins, the team experiences a recession against the backdrop of everything. I don’t think it’s critical for Yenisei-STM, I’m sure they’ll come together, you shouldn’t write them off. Also the season is long. It’s just that, again, that only means the team will need to be updated soon. The main backbone – Gerasimov, Simplikevich, Gaisin, Shcherban – are already older players. I am not saying that they are no longer in order, on the contrary! There will simply be a generation change of players who do the main work in the team.
— What do you think Krasny Yar can do this season?
– I think we can do absolutely everything – to win both the PARI Russian Championship and the PARI Russian Cup. We are only aiming for the first places. I think everything can work out for us if we give our all. We have many opportunities – a good stadium, a good base, a great team. There are all the conditions to become a champion team.
