The head of the 2024 Olympics organizing committee says the cancellation of test competitions due to the pollution of the Seine should not be a cause for concern

The boss of the Paris Summer Games organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, said there was no need to worry about the holding of swimming competitions at the 2024 Olympics, despite the cancellation of the test tournament due to the poor water quality of the Seine.

On Saturday, the International Triathlon Union (World Triathlon) did not start organizing swimming competitions as part of the paratriathlon tournament due to the high level of pollution in the Seine. In early August, the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) canceled the Open Water Swimming World Cup in Paris for a similar reason.

– These are not the same reasons as two weeks ago. You shouldn’t worry. We are in preparation, these are test competitions. We are here to continue collectively, with all State and City services, to make progress so that the quality of the water in the Seine improves.

In recent months, there have been significant positive changes. In a year, new infrastructures will appear which will improve the quality of the water in the river. We will also be able to postpone the competition for several days, which could not be done in the case of these events, since they are also World Cup stages.

Could there be a plan B in 2024 if the weekend scenario repeats itself? In any case. The place will be Paris. Various options include switching to a duathlon format. It is a possible option, but we want to organize a swimming triathlon tournament in the Seine, — quotes Estangue RMC Sport.

The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
