Athletistic/Chess. International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed his appreciation for Russian chess player Alexandra Goryachkina’s victory at the World Cup, held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Earlier in the World Cup final, Goryachkina defeated Bulgarian chess player Nurgyul Salimova in a tie-break, winning the trophy for the first time in her career.

“Alexandra has long been ranked among the strongest chess players in the world, and she was one of the favorites for this tournament in Baku. Her victory is a completely logical result, although there were many other wonderful participants in the competition who could fight for the title. In the final, however, the initiative remained with the Bulgarian chess player, however, perhaps the experience of playing at such a level high turned out to be somewhat insufficient. It was thanks to the experience of Goryachkina that she managed to win.

The patience of the Russian chess player played a key role. She realized that there was no need to take risks, and slowly tired her opponent, imposing her game on him. From the start of the match, Goryachkina’s position was more advantageous, and such positions are difficult to defend, especially when Nurgul was already tired. Despite this, she showed excellent play throughout the tournament and the final,” TASS news agency reported in Dvorkovich’s words.
