Iraqi representative Mohammed Hasan Jaloud Al-Shammari was elected president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) at the organization’s congress in Tirana.
Before the start of the elections, 12 people applied for the post, including the head of the Russian Weightlifting Federation (FTAR) Maxim Agapitov. On Saturday, Agapitov and several others withdrew their candidacy, leaving two suitors – Al-Shammari and Qatari representative Mohd Yousef Al-Mana. After the vote, it was announced that Al-Mana had also withdrawn its candidacy, so the results were not made public.
Previously, Al-Shammari served as General Secretary of the IWF.
Hungarian Tamas Ajan has led the organization since 2000; in April 2020, he left the post amid a corruption scandal. Subsequently, the IWF was led on an interim basis by American Ursula Papandrea, Thai representative Intarat Yodbangtoy and Briton Michael Irani.
