2012 Olympic medalist in swimming Yevgeny Korotyshkin in an interview with , he expressed the view that any decision regarding the participation of transgender people in competitions will lead to a discussion of discrimination.
FINA has announced that it is starting work on creating a separate category for transgender competition. At the same time, the current rules have been tightened – trans women who transitioned after age 12 will not be allowed to participate in women’s starts.
“Any decision made in this case will attract criticism and be a violation of someone’s rights,” Korotyshkin said.
– How does creating a separate category violate the rights of other athletes?
– Firstly, it will be a category that progresses rapidly in terms of results, against a background of men and women. Second, FINA will have to introduce the same prize money for the new category at the World Championships as other athletes, and the level of competition in this category will be lower.
– No one has yet said that it will be the World Cup immediately. Maybe other starts – the World Cup or even lower.
– But then the question will arise: why not at the World Championships? It will be an endless story with discussions of discrimination.
