Seven countries in the Northern Group insist on a ban on the admission of athletes and officials from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus to international competitions
Olympic committees of the Scandinavian countries confirmed that they continue to oppose the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in Olympics 2024 in Paris.
A joint statement was made by representatives of seven states – Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. The meeting was attended by Olympic, Paralympic committees, as well as sports confederations.
The Nordic Alliance states that the situation has not changed since their previous statement in February 2023. Federations oppose the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, as well as officials, in all international competitions, regardless of the status of the athletes.
Earlier, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided not to allow athletes with Russian and Belarusian passports to participate in the Asian Games. Many Russians and Belarusians planned to use this opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Olympics, but the IOC said that this idea was “impossible for technical reasons.”
Earlier, the IOC Executive Board recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, teams from Russia and Belarus, as well as athletes who support the war or have a contract with the armies of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.
