Michael Emenalo said the Saudi Championship is taking the first steps for future growth
Director of Saudi Pro League Michael Emenalo denied rumors that Saudi clubs want to get a wild card to play in Champions League.
“I don’t know where it came from. I think someone is taking a dreamy leap into a far-fetched future. It seems to me that our goal is to take quality small steps, first steps. We have to stabilize our league, make it fun for our fans and get fans around the world to pay attention to what we’re doing.”
It was previously reported that Saudi Arabian officials intend to propose to UEFA to change the structure of the current Champions League. A format of 36 teams was considered, where each would play eight matches before the playoff round, and a wild card system.
In the last edition, Manchester City won the Champions League, beating Inter in the final. The group stage of the new Champions League season starts on September 19.
