According to , the rule of reducing the components in figure skating from five to three will come into effect next season.
Earlier, reported that a working group led by Russian referee Alla Shekhovtsova had drawn up a proposal to optimize the components. The International Skating Union (ISU) Congress, held in June in Phuket, approved it. Previously, the second assessment included ‘skate handling’ (or ‘skating skills’), ‘connecting elements’, ‘performance’, ‘composition’ and ‘music interpretation’. After the reduction, there will be three: “composition”, “skating” and a new “presentation” component, which will include elements of “performance” and “music interpretation”.
According to a source from , the new system has already been tested during the ISU refereeing seminars, which took place immediately after the congress. It will start operating in competitions from next season.
“Well, there really is a difference between 5 and 3 components,” one of the judges who tested the new system told . — We are going from 27 criteria to 14. That’s still a lot, but I think that now it will be easier for us to assess each of the components at their fair value. Is it practical? I don’t think “comfortable” is the right word. Reducing to three components is a logical solution, but it still takes some getting used to.
The first major international competitions on the ISU calendar will begin at the end of August.
