Coach of the Russian national biathlon team Yuri Kaminsky said that during seminars he analyzes a skier’s sprint run Nikita Kryoukov as part of the 2015 World Championships in Falun (Sweden).
Kryukov is the 2010 Olympic champion in individual sprint and the 2014 Sochi Games silver medalist in team sprint. The athlete also has three victories at the world championships. At the 2015 Falun World Championships, Kryukov became fourth in the individual sprint. Kaminsky began training Kryukov when the athlete was seven years old.
— When I lead sprint seminars, I always remember this start. On the eve of the final race, Nikita and I agreed that, as usual, I would take a key point of the track and during the race I would suggest which track is better to take. As a result, before one of the turns, Kryukov, based on our tactics, stands on the rightmost track and follows it. From a tactical point of view, this was the most optimal solution. But then, for some reason, Nikita jumped behind the athlete walking next to him. And so he released Peter Northug, who was following him, forward. Of course, Northug immediately accelerated, pulled away even harder on the next climb and the gold medal question was resolved. And Nikita had to leave the last place.
Nikita reached the finish line fifth, with a lead over the fourth, caught up with him, overtook him and caught up with the third. But he found himself on the ski slope behind Canadian Harvey, who was second, and he had to change lanes to move on to the next one. Well, it was not possible to completely complete the final stage: Nikita put his ski on the Canadian’s boot in front and was left without a medal.
There is an example of a different order when Kryukov won the Royal Sprint in Stockholm in 2016. There he stayed for a long time, but as soon as a hole appeared, he immediately put his head there – the fifth. Before the finish line, a similar situation occurred again. He stuck his head in – the fourth. At the start, the gap was huge, in terms of sprinting. But it was on this layer of snow that Kryukov was technically the only one to manage to organize the race perfectly. As a result, during the race he saved energy, and at the finish he overtook his rivals as if passing an empty barn,” Kaminsky said according to RT.
