Athletistic/Wrestling. President of the Russian Wrestling Federation Mikhail Mamiashvili responded to the refusal of Ukrainian Greco-Roman wrestler Yaroslav Filchakov to take a group photo with Russian athlete Aues Gonibov in Belgrade during the World Championships.

Gonibov and Filchakov won bronze medals in the weight category up to 82 kg. Azerbaijan’s Rafig Huseynov won gold and Iran’s Azizkhon Mokhmadipiani took silver. After the award ceremony, Gonibov and Mokhmadipiani went to the podium to take a joint photo with Guseinov, and Filchakov left him.

“It’s a shame that they are indoctrinated with such ideas and intimidated. All the athletes are gathered here and congratulate each other. He just turned and left. How can this be done? It’s not in the spirit of sport. I am sure that this evil minority who tries to introduce these ideas by destroying the foundations will sooner or later fail in their jubilant thoughts.

We’re all sitting here watching the fights. If a Ukrainian fights well, if he shows will, we support him emotionally. It doesn’t even occur to me to wish him harm,” Mamiashvili said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

  • Mamiashvili called those who planned to prevent Russian wrestlers from participating in the World Championships scoundrels.
