Five-time Olympic cross-country ski champion, Norwegian Johannes Klebo in the absence of the Russian national team, he has little motivation for the World Cup, believes the Olympic champion Alexander Legkov.
Previously, Klebo turned down a place on the Norwegian national team and went to self-fund and train with a personal trainer. Current rules do not allow athletes to compete in the World Cup outside of their national team. In September it was reported that Klebo had refused to sign a contract with the Norwegian Ski Federation.
— It seems to me that it is possible that Klebo is not interested because he is running alone. He is a renowned athlete, there is no one stronger than him in sprinting. Maybe he will lose something by not participating in the World Cup, maybe not. You will only benefit from the marathon movement. He needs real competitors here and there. The Russian national team is a serious rival,” Legkov said on the air of the program “Everyone for the match!” on the channel.
By decision of the International Ski Federation (FIS), Russian and Belarusian athletes missed the 2022/23 international season. In May, the FIS maintained the suspension of Russians and Belarusians until further notice.
