IOC members called on President Thomas Bach to change the charter and extend his tenure at the head of the organization

The current presidential term expires in 2025

At the annual meeting International Olympic Committee (IOC) several of its members called on the head of the organization Thomas Bach change the statute limiting the term of office of the president and run for an extraordinary term.

German Thomas Bach, a former Olympic champion (1976) in foil fencing, became IOC president in 2013. In 2021, he was re-elected for four years on an uncontested basis. Bach’s term of office expires in 2025 – according to the current charter, no one has the right to hold this post for more than 12 years.

Proponents of changing the charter cite the global crisis of recent years and the need for a proven leader. One of the initiators of the above proposal, the head of the African Olympic organizations, Mustapha Berraf, said that the Olympic movement needs to “go through this period of torment with a president who has proven his courage.”

69-year-old Bach officially neither supported nor rejected this proposition, but expressed his gratitude to its authors for the trust they placed in it.

It is reported that a proposal to amend the charter regarding presidential term limits may be officially announced at the annual IOC session, which will be held next summer in Paris, on the eve of the 2024 Olympic Games.
