Granit Xhaka made his 118th appearance for Switzerland, equaling the national record

By the end of the year, Captain Nati will probably have time to become the sole record holder

Team captain Switzerland Granite Xhaka played his 118th match for the national team. He repeated the achievement Heinz Hermannwhich lasted for more than 30 years.

Switzerland almost embarrassed themselves in this match, which was special for their captain. The leader of Group I in the Euro 2024 qualification miraculously avoided defeat in the home match with the Belarusian team.

The Swiss won the first half thanks to a goal from Xherdan Shaqiri. But after the break, something indescribable began. The visitors, who had the ball only 29% of the time, had three shots at Jan Sommer’s goal – and all three were goals. Murat Yakin’s team had enough time to avoid shame – accurate shots from Manuel Akanji and Zeki Amduni recorded the score 3:3.

The Swiss, with 15 points, continue to lead their qualifying group, two points ahead of Romania and four points ahead of Israel (a game in hand).

31-year-old midfielder Granit Xhaka, who moved from Arsenal to Bayer Leverkusen this summer, has been playing for the Swiss national team since the summer of 2011. In 118 matches, he scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists.

It is curious that Granit’s older brother, Taulant Xhaka, chose the Albanian national team and participated in the 2016 European Championship with it.

Before the end of the year, the Central European team must play three more matches, so in one of them Xhaka will certainly become the sole record holder.
