Russian figure skater Karina Akopova who performs in pairs skating with Nikita Rakhmanin, explained why the couple did not want to leave last year’s programs for the new season.
After the October meeting of the Council of the International Skating Union (ISU), the communiqué on the suspension of Russian athletes remained in force. The next congress meeting will be held in November in online format. There will be no more meetings until the end of 2023.
“I definitely had no idea about leaving last year’s free skate, because it was like a trigger for me. After that incident, I was never able to skate it fully. The short program was interesting, but Fedor (Klimov, the pair’s coach – editor’s note) and Nikita found the music and said that’s it, we put it in the short program, it’s not even discussed. And so we decided to change the short program, we definitely wouldn’t leave it. Last season was quite difficult, I didn’t want to remember what was associated with these programs,” Akopova said as quoted by “Championship”.
Akopova and Rakhmanin are winners of several international Challengers and the Denis Ten Memorial.
