“It could have been a reckless reception.” Laishev on the doping scandal with Valieva at the Beijing Olympics

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva could have taken a prohibited substance by negligence, but the athlete is in no way to blame. This opinion was expressed in an interview with by the director of the Sambo-70 sports and educational center, Renat Laishev.

Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing became the Olympic champion in the team tournament. Immediately after the competition, it became known that a small concentration of the banned substance trimetazidine was found in the athlete’s doping sample taken during the Russian championship in December. Nevertheless, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed Valieva to participate in individual competitions, where she became the fourth. The investigation into the athlete and his entourage is continuing.

– But you don’t admit that doping can really exist? Purely in theory, optional.

– I admit that there could be a careless reception. When I was an athlete, I fought in the 68 kg category. Once I had to lose weight, I took a sip of furosemide – 2 kg fell. Now it’s a banned substance, and before we didn’t even know it.

The psyche of a young athlete is arranged in such a way that everything is aimed at winning. I don’t care what happens to you today. It seems to them that life is endless and the first place is one. Why are they recruited into the army at the age of 18? Because you just grab a machine gun and go, not really understanding what awaits you. You did not know life, you did not see what death is.

Therefore, everything is of course possible. But, it seems to me that if Camila had anything, it was definitely by accident or thoughtlessly.
