Papu Gomez: Terbutaline is allowed for professional athletes and does not improve football performance in any way

The ex-Metalist player and world champion clearly does not agree with the harsh verdict of disqualification

Ex-player of Metalist, Atalanta, Sevilla and Argentina national team Alejandro “Papu” Gomez made an official statement regarding his receipt of a two-year disqualification for doping.

“I confirm that I have received notice from the Spanish Anti-Doping Commission that my license has been suspended for a period of two years.”

“I have always not only strictly complied with all the rules, but also been a strong defender of clean sport and sportsmanship, categorically condemning any form of doping.”

“I have never relied and do not intend to rely on prohibited practices.”

“The alleged violation relates to the presence of terbutaline in my body, which I accidentally swallowed with a spoonful of cough syrup for my son to relieve his cough. It is important to clarify that terbutaline is approved for professional athletes and does not in any way improve performance in football.”

“Without delving into the situation, I have asked my lawyers to consider the suggestion that the disciplinary matter was not dealt with in accordance with the norms.”

“Finally, I want to thank everyone who showed me affection and support during these difficult moments in my professional life.”

Let us remind you that the other day it became known that Gomez was disqualified for two years due to a positive doping test, which the attacking midfielder passed in November 2022, while in the Sevilla training camp.

As it turned out, Gomez and Seville had known about the result of the doping test for several months. It is for this reason that the Spanish club announced the early termination of the contract with the Argentine on September 1 this year, although the agreement was valid until 2024.

Subsequently, 35-year-old Gomez said that he was ready to retire if he did not receive a suitable offer.

Despite this, on September 29, Monza took the risk of signing the experienced midfielder. For the Italian club, Alejandro only managed to come on as a substitute twice, playing a total of 40 minutes.

In addition to Seville and Monza, the Argentine played for Arsenal Sarandi, San Lorenzo, Catania, Kharkov Metalist (24 matches, 4 goals and 6 assists) and Atalanta throughout his career. As part of the Argentina national team, the midfielder became a world champion, playing two matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
