Porto defender Pepe became the oldest field player to play in the Champions League

The ex-Real Madrid player surpassed Scotsman Weir and Italian Costacurta in this indicator

Coming out in the 3rd round match Champions League Antwerp — PortoPortuguese defender Pepe became the tournament record holder. The center back is the oldest fielder to play in this tournament.

The Portuguese is currently 40 years and 241 days old. He broke the previous record by exactly 30 days, which was held between David Weir (Rangers, 2010) and Alessandro Costacurta (Milan, 2006).

For Pepe, today’s match is not the first in the current Champions League. He already played in the first round against Shakhtar (3:1). But then, on September 19, he was a few days short of the record. In the second round against Barcelona (0:1) he did not play due to injury.

In 2019, the defender returned to Porto and remains the main player there to this day. He played a total of 258 matches for the Dragons, scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists. In April, the 40-year-old player extended his contract with Porto until the summer of 2024.

Now the second half is underway in Antwerp. Porto leads with a score of 3:1. Another match in this group has already been played – Barcelona beat Shakhtar at home with a score of 2:1.
