Maria Lasitskene won the Russian Cup in Bryansk, becoming the only athlete to reach the height of 1.94. After that, Maria ordered two meters, but all three jumps failed.
1.94 thus became a repeat of the best result of the season in Russia, which Lasitskene showed at the national team championship at the end of May in Sochi.
Lasitskene actually arrived in Bryansk from Serbia, where she trained and received an American visa, and this year the world championships will be held in the United States. The presence of a visa, of course, created a lot of questions about how and why the athlete received it.
About all these moments – and the beginning, and the state, and future plans, and obtaining a visa – Maria told reporters after the end of the competition.
– In the morning I felt good, despite the fact that I don’t like to get up early. In general, when I found out what time the competitions start, I was a little stunned, because on the one hand it was clear that it was going to be hot, and on the other hand I do not like also early departures. But I listened to an early climb and, having come to the area, I felt good.
When was the last time you jumped so early?
– In Tokyo, for qualifying (Laughs). But it was there even earlier, and I also convinced myself that there was nothing to do and that I had to take care of it.
But it was also warmer.
“You better not even remember how hot it was there. Today was much more convenient.
Do you often remember the Olympic Games?
– Yesterday I was browsing YouTube and came across the height finale. I quickly removed it so as not to soak. The past is beautiful, thanks to him for that, but we have to move forward.
Did you manage to move forward today?
– I think it was clear from the jumps that I was improving all the way and today there were good attempts, I took all the heights from the first up to 1.94. She confirmed her best result of the season in Russia, but naturally I want to jump higher, show results closer to two meters and beyond two. Today it didn’t work out, even though there were all the conditions for it, the area is beautiful, it’s my first time in Bryansk, and I like it, even though there are wind. But everyone has a special relationship with the wind, and everyone should be ready for it.
– Did the strong wind blowing the first day the pole was held scare you?
– Vladas, husband, said the wind. I replied that you wouldn’t do anything and completely calmly forgot about it. But today, of course, I waited in a few attempts, because the flag was flying back and forth and I wanted to find an option when it was possible to jump well. I even looked at the judges’ flag more, because at first it’s normal, and then, when you rush, it flies away. He seems to be coping, but, again, it’s all on the same terms, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
– Why did you decide to jump exactly two meters?
– It is a height that confirms that you are well, everything is fine, you are in good shape. Well, what, add five centimeters, adjust 1.99? Naturally, if the girls were supported by jumps, I would be happy to continue with them according to the rules of climbing. Today we have decided that you should not look for secrets and mysteries in this. If the coach has goals, he says what height to set, but today I decided that myself.
– Did you like at least one attempt at two meters?
– The second, it seems to me, worked more or less, but in general it is none of my business, the coach will tell you what, where and how.
– Since you were the only one to have taken 1.94, did you manage to feel the competition?
— Yes, I even got nervous when we started approaching 1.94.
What does it take to jump two meters?
– Competition, competition. In general, you don’t have to think, you have to do. Anyway, I did my best today.
Not enough adrenaline?
– Unfortunately yes. It’s hard to reach those shaky knees in our sector, and I really need them.
– How come shaky knees help you jump higher?
– It came a long time ago, even when I sobbed as a child that I was afraid of competitions, I was afraid to go to the sector, Gennady Garikovich always told me: “Be afraid, it will help you, direct this force towards positive energy so that everything moves forward. You have to face this, because if you stop being afraid, you can quit any profession, it seems to me. There has to be excitement whether it works or not, what needs to be done for it to work.
– Due to what does it turn out that excitement becomes positive?
I don’t know how to translate it, I can’t help it. I’m shaking. Leave? I can’t because I want to win. Drink Novopassit? I don’t want to, because it will dirty me. Therefore, I get up and silently do my setup for the competition.
– Where to go?
– The coach still decided to go to Belarus, we will jump to Brest and Minsk. We will change the facility, we will change the stadiums, I hope it will bring success. You have to jump, you have to jump a lot, the main thing is that there are competitions. And we are ready to jump. You have to get in shape, get ready for the Spartakiad…
– Do you need to prepare for something special, taking into account the American visa in your passport?
“I’m afraid I’ll never need it, which is very sad. The gear sponsor tried to make it for me for almost a year, so I couldn’t resist providing it. It’s sad to have this visa, but the circumstances will not allow me to defend my three titles.
