“The ultrasprint went well, but we need to work out the format with a large number of participants” – Latypov

Triple Olympic medalist in biathlon Edward Latypov told that he was very interested in participating in the ultrasprint in Aldan, but for this distance to be permanently included in the competition calendar, the race format must be carefully worked out.

Latypov won the ultrasprint, which took place at the Aldan ski center in Yakutia (Sakha Republic). Ivan Kolotov took second place among men, Kirill Bazhin completed the top three. Among women, local biathlete Regina Petrova became the first. Larisa Kuklina made two errors in second place and Kristina Pavlushina finished third.

— Fun, unusual competitions! This is the first time we have done such a short distance, something akin to a super sprint. It’s very interesting to attempt such distances, the race was great. There were a lot of supporters, the organization was excellent, everything went very well.

— Is ultrasprinting permanently necessary in the Russian calendar?

— I don’t know, anyway, this format has to be well developed. It was now a pen test, in which only 20 people participated. But how this will happen in a large-scale competition like the Russian Cup, in which, for example, 80 people participate, remains a question. Will it be easy to organize an ultrasprint for such a large number of athletes? It is important to time runs correctly, including rest between them. It is not so easy. And today the races were held quickly, without problems, only 20 people competed, ”Latypov told .

The athletes ran a distance of 1900 meters with two shooting stages in three stages: prologue, semi-final with elimination and final. Six athletes qualified for the deciding round.
