Mainz allows El Ghazi to return to training and matches

Earlier, the Dutch winger of Moroccan origin was suspended for a pro-Palestinian publication

Mainz let his winger Anwar El Ghazi return to training and prepare for future matches with the team. At the same time, the footballer received an official warning from the club.

The reason for the scandal was a pro-Palestinian publication that a 28-year-old Dutch football player of Moroccan origin had previously posted on social networks.

El Ghazi’s suspension from training was announced on October 17. The publication had been deleted by that time. Mainz insists it distances itself from the controversial statement in support of Palestine, which does not coincide with the club’s values.

The player himself has managed to repent over the past time. He openly distanced himself from terrorist attacks similar to those of Hamas, which began the current round of aggravation of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Anwar also said that he does not question Israel’s right to exist.

Mainz “pardoned” El-Ghazi, but at the same time officially announced a warning to the player. As an employee of the club, he is obliged to abide by a code of values, which implies responsibility towards the State of Israel and the Jewish people. The reasons are both dark pages in the recent history of Germany and the history of FC Mainz itself, one of the founders of which was a member of the Jewish community Eugen Salomon.

El Ghazi became a player for the German club at the end of September. The winger previously left PSV and joined Mainz as a free agent. El Ghazi played in three Bundesliga matches, providing one assist.

Mainz currently sits at the bottom of the standings with three points. The carnival workers have never won in the first nine rounds. On November 4, the El Ghazi team will host RB Leipzig.
