Alexander Bolshunov Sr., father of a three-time Olympic cross-country ski champion Alexandra Bolshunova spoke about her son’s collision with a skier Sergei Ustyugov during the Russian Cup stage in Krasnogorsk last season.
During last season, Ustyugov and Bolshunov regularly exchanged barbs in the press and on social networks. They also collided on the track during the Russian Cup stage in Krasnogorsk.
“I was in Krasnogorsk and saw in what condition Sasha arrived. Then I looked through it and read Sergei’s words, which said one thing and then another. I understand perfectly well that Sergei Ustyugov’s fans have their own view of the situation, while Alexander Bolshunov’s fans have a different one. And for those who support other skiers, it’s the third. But I will tell you my story. An athlete of such a class as Ustyugov, during a descent with a turn, cannot accidentally push his opponent with his left foot – he simply brazenly threw him off the track. It’s like driving a car: if you walk parallel to another car and turn right, it’s clear that the one on the left will fly away. There will be cruelty and death. A top skier could have easily avoided the collision, but he deliberately did not succeed. I mean Sergei Ustyugov,” Championship quotes Bolshunov Sr.
Bolshunov, 26, is a three-time Olympic champion, world skiathlon champion, two-time World Cup winner, two-time winner of the Tour de Ski multi-day ski race.
Ustyugov is 31 years old, he is the 2022 Olympic champion in the 4×10 km relay, double world champion in 2017 (in skiathlon and team sprint) and winner of the Tour de Ski for the 2016/17 season.
