The current trophy holder has resigned
Wolfsburg beat on home field with minimal score RB Leipzig in the 1/16 finals of the German Cup – 1:0.
The hosts managed a quick goal – Vaclav Cerny scored it in the 14th minute. All the Bulls’ attempts to win back were in vain, and soon after the break, Marco Rose’s team remained in the minority – Yussuf Poulsen received a second yellow card. The guests only hit the hosts’ target once during the entire match.
Both teams entered the fight for the trophy at the previous stage. Wolfsburg easily defeated Maccabi Berlin (6:0), and Leipzig had to sweat against Wehen (3:2).
The Wolves managed to eliminate the winner of the Cup in the last two editions at the 1/16 final stage. For the first time since 2021, the prestigious trophy will not be won by a Leipzig club.
In the Bundesliga, Leipzig (20 points) is in fifth place, five points behind the leading Bayer Leverkusen. Wolfsburg, having suffered four defeats in the last five rounds, is ninth with 12 points.
On November 4, Leipzig will play away against the main outsider of the championship, Mainz, and Wolfsburg will host Werder the next day.
