Senior coach of the Russian national team Yuri Kaminsky commented on the decision by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the International Biathlon Union (IBU) to equalize the men’s and women’s distances, calling it a “real inequality” for athletes and athletes.
Since last season, in cross-country skiing, the men’s and women’s distances have been equalized at the World Cup (10, 20 and 50 km). On June 20, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved equal distances for women and men at the 2026 Olympic Games.
In October, it became known that the International Biathlon Union (IBU) decided to equalize the distance between the men’s and women’s stages of the mixed relay. From now on, all athletes will run three laps of two kilometers.
– I don’t really understand when they made the same distances for men and women. In fact, this is an inequality, because in terms of time, women will take much longer to cover the same distance. What is equality? In response, we received low visibility of the competition, as women were just starting to form an elite from different countries fighting among themselves, and these changes once again give an advantage to the Norwegians. There are quite a few Norwegians in different committees. They probably got this decision passed.
– How does this benefit them?
– Last season there were clearly a few Norwegians who did not express themselves very brilliantly in standard disciplines, but who showed themselves better at longer distances. Norwegians thought about it and supported this movement,” Kaminsky quotes Metaratings.ru.
