World figure skating champion Maria Butyrskaya gave advice to Kamila Valieva.
— Now our girls have enough competition without international competitions?
— We have the strongest school in our country, especially in women’s single skating. I see a lot of talented girls. They have great potential and desire. And there is enough competition at national competitions. But as a world and European champion, winning the Grand Prix Final is a slightly different level. Athletes aspire to the highest. Everyone knows perfectly well what they can and should do. But they don’t give you a chance. I think everyone is offended.
— What advice would you give to Kamila Valieva, who will make her debut at the fourth stage of the Russian Grand Prix in Kazan (November 10-12)?
– Don’t stop, don’t give up. This will definitely end. I don’t think it will last for decades. Many sports are already bringing back Russian athletes. “Whoever endures it will shine in the near future on the international stage,” Butyrskaya quotes KP Sport.
Valieva at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing helped the Russian team win gold in the team competition. Before the personal tournament, it became known that the banned drug trimetazidine was found during the doping test of the figure skater of the Russian championship. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) admitted the Russian to the individual competitions of the Games, where she took fourth place.
In January this year, the anti-doping disciplinary committee of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (DAK RUSADA) ruled that although the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bore “no fault or negligence”. Valieva avoided sanctions, except for the cancellation of her results on the date of sample collection – December 25, 2021. Subsequently, RUSADA, the International Skating Union (ISU) and the World Skating Agency Anti-Doping (WADA) filed appeals with the CAS, which were consolidated into a single proceeding.
The CAS hearings took place on September 26 and 28, after which it was announced that they would resume on November 9 and 10.
