Roy Jones: Usyk’s fight with Fury means nothing, Tyson should give Ngannou a rematch

The Briton defeated the former UFC champion by split decision

Former world champion in several weight categories Roy Jones believes that the WBC belt holder Tyson Fury should have a rematch with the former UFC champion Francis Ngannou instead of a fight for the undisputed title with a Ukrainian Alexander Usik.

“We were surprised because Ngannou performed much better than anyone would have expected from him. He knocked down the heavyweight champion of the world.”

“Now we have a big problem. We don’t want to start boxing with a bad taste in our mouth. The problem is that people have already invested, so they don’t want to take it away. “If we don’t come back and do the Tyson Fury-Francis Ngannou rematch and clean this up and get a real clear winner, we’re only going to hurt boxing even more.”

“I understand that he has already signed a contract for the fight with Usyk. But if Usyk loves boxing as much as I do, if Fury and everyone else loves boxing as much as I do, we’ll have to go back to Ngannou first. Usik’s fight with Fury means nothing. We don’t think Tyson beat Francis. So why is he fighting with Usyk? Boxing has to clean up its act someday.”

On the night of October 29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Fury defeated Ngannou and won the Riyadh champion title. The fight, according to boxing rules, lasted all the allotted 10 rounds, following which Fury won by split decision: two judges gave him the victory with scores of 95–94 and 96–93, and the third – 95–94 in favor of Ngannou. In the third round, Francis knocked down Tyson, but the Briton managed to return to the fight.

Fury’s next fight should be with WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Oleksandr Usyk. The fight for the undisputed heavyweight title is scheduled for February 2024.
