Pyatenko: We didn’t deserve to lose in the first match with Greece, but we didn’t convert our chances

The Ukrainian women’s team takes third place in the Nations League group

Head coach Ukrainian women’s national football team Vladimir Pyatenko summed up the results of two matches with the Greek national team in the group tournament League of Nations. Let us remind you that in the match of the 3rd round the Ukrainians lost (1:2), and then beat the Greeks in the fourth round (1:0).

“We went to Greece for victories. I think that we did not deserve to lose in the first match, however, unlike the hosts, having a game advantage, we did not capitalize on our scoring chances. Moreover, there were some individual mistakes in defense, which to a certain extent also influenced the final result.”

“First of all, we had to take care that the female football players did not fall into a psychological hole. After all, in my opinion, even in the previously lost matches with Poland and Serbia, the team deserved better. It all worked out, the girls took to the field determined to break the losing streak.”

“As for the nuances of the game, it was necessary to make it more difficult for the opponents to run on the flanks, to improve the selection of the ball in the supporting zone. Our team succeeded, we played enough to win.”

“We have already calculated all the options and will fight to the end. We will play with Poland on December 1st. We will gather on November 26 immediately after the Ukrainian Cup final and go to a neighboring country. The final match is scheduled for December 5 – away against Serbia. It won’t be possible without rotation in the lineup again. I hope that several football players who, due to injuries, could not help us against Greece, will have time to recover.”

The Ukrainian started in Division B of the Nations League with three defeats. The Ukrainians lost to Serbia, Poland and Greece with the same score 1:2. With the Greek women, by mutual agreement, both matches were played away in the city of Heraklion.

Having scored the first three points, the blue-yellows bypassed Greece and rose to third place in the quartet. According to the regulations, the group winners directly advance to the elite division. Second place gives the right to participate in the playoffs. The fourth position is an automatic demotion.

The final stage of the Women’s League of Nations, which will also serve as a qualifying stage for the 2024 Olympics, and play-offs are scheduled for the period from February 21 to 28, 2024.
