Mishin on the death of two-time Olympic champion Protopopov: “I am in mourning. The genius of figure skating is dead”

Honored coach of Russia in figure skating Alexei Michin in a conversation with a correspondent, he called the late two-time Olympic pair skating champion Oleg Protopopov a genius.

On Friday, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) announced that Protopopov had died at the age of 91. Protopopov performed in tandem with his wife Lyudmila Belousova. The duo won the USSR championships six times, the world and European championships four times, and won gold at the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games.

– I am in mourning. The genius of figure skating, the man with whom I spent a significant part of my sporting life in the same locker room, has died. I’m proud of it,” Mishin told .
