“In Turin, the whole public was running with Russian flags. It was necessary to “close the doors” and not hear anything” – Roman Kostomarov on the 2006 Olympic Games

Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov recalled the atmosphere of the Turin Games, stressing that it was difficult for him to contain his emotions with the strong support of the public.

Kostomarov associated with Tatiana Navka won gold at the 2006 Olympics.

— Did you have the feeling that you would take gold?

— Tanya may be exaggerating when she says she knew there would be a victory in Turin. Maybe she had signs, superstitions. I had something else – I understood that I should do my job to the fullest, not paying attention to anything. As your career progresses, you learn this and gradually progress. When I was young it seemed to me that if I won the World Championship that would be enough, why do we need the Olympics? When you become a world champion, you understand that the Olympic Games are the pinnacle of sport. But all this time you have been mentally preparing yourself to withstand the tension and not break something.

There is also an element of luck. What a rock fall we have had, we all have falls – our nerves or our emotions are overwhelmed. In Turin, everyone ran with Russian flags. You go out on the ice, you have to “close the doors” and not hear anything. As soon as you relax, there will be an error. They did it the right way, with great care and focus.

Support during the show encourages you, but the main thing is to control your emotions, ”Kostomarov said during the federal educational marathon “Knowledge”.

Kostomarov, 46, suffered multiple amputations after his hospitalization in 2023 and was discharged in July.
