“A 46-year-old child appeared” – Kostomarov on the difficulties of everyday life after amputations

Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov said that after several amputations, he compares himself to a small child in everyday life.

The athlete underwent several amputations after his hospitalization in 2023 and was released in July.

— First of all, I’m still adjusting to everyday life. I get used to the fact that I have to brush my teeth, wash my face, do something in the kitchen myself, pour tea and coffee. There are many difficult things in everyday life that I cannot do.

We have a 46 year old child, that’s the two youngest and me. I am gradually adapting, I can brush my teeth and blow my own nose. You have to get used to it. When I went to the gym, I adapted a little. But at home, opening, closing the door, closing the refrigerator, these little things are difficult. The spoon is quite difficult to handle.

Whatever the prosthesis is, it’s a pipe. It works, but it’s not as functional because it can do things you can do with your hands. You experience all things differently in everyday life. I hope things will improve soon.

Today there are bionic prostheses. I hope that in the future there will be more functional prostheses, they can be used much more often. You cannot drive with a prosthesis. You feel everything much better with your own hands. You have to adapt to everyday life. If people watch, this is motivation,” Kostomarov said during the federal educational marathon “Knowledge”.

Kostomarov, partnered with Tatyana Navka, won gold at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, and also won the World Championships twice and the European Championships three times.
