The case of runner Caster Semenya has been referred to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has announced that the case against the two-time Olympic 800 meters champion Castor Semenya of South Africa will be examined by the Grand Chamber, reports Spiegel.

The purpose of the review will be to make a final decision following a request to transfer the file from the Swiss government. The court agreed to be the next authority to hear the athlete’s complaint regarding the controversial testosterone rule.

The 32-year-old celebrated a victory at the ECHR in July when judges in Strasbourg ruled that Semenya had been discriminated against in a previous Swiss Federal Court ruling. Semenya denies having been banned from certain competitions because she refuses to reduce her testosterone levels with medication.

The Federal Court, as well as the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), had previously rejected Semenya’s request to ban her from participating in international athletics competitions. However, in July, the Strasbourg court ruled that his complaint contained “credible allegations of discrimination based on high testosterone levels.”
