Former Olympic figure skating coach sentenced to one year in prison for sexual assault of teenage girl

Canadian figure skating coach Richard Gauthier was sentenced to a year in prison for sexual assault and indecent acts against a teenage girl, reports Radio-Canada .

In January, the 61-year-old specialist was found guilty in a case of violence against a 14-year-old athlete, incidents occurring in 1984 and 1985. Gauthier was accused of having swum naked with the victim, of having taken a shower with him and having slept with him on a bed at the defendant’s house.

It should be noted that Gauthier’s lawyers asked for a suspended sentence or a prison sentence that could be served on weekends, but, according to the judge, this would be “inappropriate” and would minimize the importance of the crime.

Olympic pairs skating champions Megan Duhamel/Eric Redford and Jamie Sale/David Pelletier trained under Gauthier.
