“When I hear about doping in other sports, like among Norwegian skiers and biathletes, I don’t understand why we are discussing it so hotly? It’s especially unclear when they say they want to do something with Kamila Valieva. We need to realize that we have mistakes and flaws. In Valieva’s case, we had to lie more believably. Who would believe a fairy tale about accidentally having a drink? It’s simply absurd!
In this matter with Valieva, we ourselves are responsible. We gave other hostile countries the opportunity to point out our mistakes.
All we have to do now is work to make this end faster. Let’s engage in self-improvement, and not point the finger at others and say that they too are doping. Nothing good will come of this approach. We must not forget that there are countries that do not view us favorably. And they have the right to do so. But always remember that Russia is the country of the strongest athletes and the attention to us will always be three times greater – every mistake we make will be emphasized,” Rodnina said in a conversation with a Sport24 correspondent.
In December 2021, Valieva passed a positive doping test at the national championship, and this became known the day after the Russian team’s victory in the team tournament at the Beijing Olympics in February 2022.
