Athletistic/Figure skating. Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin expressed his position regarding the statement of three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina that the Russian side should have “better lied” in the case of figure skater Kamila Valieva.

Kamila Valieva received positive results from a doping test at the Russian Championships in December 2021. This became known the day after the victory of the Russian team in the team tournament at the Beijing Olympics in February 2022. In this regard , the presentation of medals was suspended until the investigation into Valieva’s case was completed.

“It seems strange to me to hear such statements from a State Duma deputy, three-time Olympic champion. Public assessments based on one’s own conjectures and not confirmed by knowledge of the details of the process are unacceptable. This is a violation of the “ethics and culture of the sports community. We must treat our victories with care and respect, coaches and athletes, and also use sports to unite Russian society, and not to create provocative reasons for broadcasting in the media,” Matytsin noted in an interview with TASS.

  • Rodnina: “You should have lied more plausibly about Valieva. No one will believe the story that she accidentally drank the wrong drink.”
