Senior coach of the Russian cross-country ski team Yuri Borodavko spoke in an interview with RT about the problems of motivation of athletes in the context of exclusion from international competitions.
Earlier it was reported that the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) confirmed the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes for the 2023/24 season.
“Unfortunately, the news coming from the FIS and the International Olympic Committee does not add positive emotions to our athletes. It’s important to understand something else here: it doesn’t happen in ski racing that, with the wave of a magic wand, you find the shape you need in two months. It must be maintained continuously for many years. Otherwise, we will not be successful. And athletes understand this.
— Is maintaining motivation a difficult process?
– Very. The bar is gradually lowering, whether we like it or not. The level of competition decreases, the level of competition decreases, domestic problems become more and more distracting. Plus – diseases. I know some athletes wonder if they should turn to coaching. But it is in moments of weakness, in moments of serious illness, that fatigue accumulates. As soon as fatigue passes, the eyes start to burn again,” Borodavko said.
