Athletistic/OI. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the IOC is not considering canceling the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, given the growing number of military conflicts around the world. The Olympic Games had already been canceled three times due to war: in 1916, 1940 and 1944.

“There are very strong geopolitical tensions. But to say that we will sacrifice the Games would be a completely wrong approach. We have had many wars between governments and countries, but athletes have always participated in the Games. This is in line with the Olympic Mission. I do not know if there will be a world war. Betrayal of the fundamental idea of sport is impossible for the IOC. According to the UN definition, there are currently 28 wars going on in the world. Our mission is a humanitarian mission for athletes and sport. We try to take that into account. People also need something that unites them,” Bach noted.

The Paris Summer Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
