The European Union did not follow the lead of the International Federation and disqualified the athletes.
The European Judo Union has continued to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes, unlike the International Federation. This was reported by the press service of EJU. Athletes from these countries will not be able to participate in any of the competitions under the leadership of the organization.
It should be noted that sanctions on athletes from aggressor countries were imposed immediately after the start of a full -scale invasion of Ukraine. EJU then acted in conjunction with the International Judo Federation. However, the IJF reversed its decision in June and allowed athletes to compete in neutral status. They explained their decision by the fact that they did not want to mix sports and politics.
However, the European Judo Union has a different opinion and during an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee decided that judokas from Russia and Belarus will not participate in the upcoming EJU competitions at the levels of adult, youth and junior. In addition, the meeting agreed to close the EJU office in Moscow.
It should be noted that in 2022, under the auspices of the EJU, planned to be held the European Championships with juniors (September 15-18) and youth (October 28-30), as well as a number of European cup stages.
