Spalletti: Victory over North Macedonia will give us an advantage in the match with Ukraine

Squadra Azzurra’s mentor does not rule out rotation, but does not plan to get carried away with it even against the backdrop of personnel problems

Head coach Italian national team Luciano Spalletti spoke about preparations for the decisive fights against North Macedonia And Ukraine in qualification Euro 2024.

“Winning the first game will give us an advantage in the second, so we will focus on this team [Северной Македонии]. There may be some decisions to be made on players given that we have two games so close to each other, but despite that, I will not play one lineup in one game and a different lineup in the second.”

It was no coincidence that the 64-year-old mentor raised the personnel issue. Just last day it became known that Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, defenders Davide Calabria (Milan), Rafael Toloi (Atalanta) and midfielder Manuel Locatelli (Juventus) will miss the November European Championship qualifying matches due to injuries. They join previously injured attack players Lorenzo Pellegrini and Mattia Zaccagni.

Also, according to the head coach, other performers have health problems, whose condition will become clear in the coming hours. We are talking about central midfielders Brian Cristante (Roma) and Jorginho (Arsenal), as well as Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso.

Considering this whole complex of personnel problems, Spalletti does not rule out additional calls for new performers to the Squadra Azzurra camp.

The Italian national team in qualifying group C (England from there has already qualified for the Euro ahead of schedule) is three points behind second-placed Ukraine, having a match in hand. For second place in the remaining matches, with North Macedonia at home and Ukraine in Leverkusen, Luciano Spalletti’s team needs to take four points.

Italy will play North Macedonia on November 17. The key match with Ukraine is scheduled for November 20.
