Ultramarathon record holder disqualified for using car during race

The ultramarathon world record holder, Briton Joasia Zakrzewski, was disqualified for 12 months after running part of the marathon by car, reports the British Athletics press service.

In April this year, Zakrzewski finished third in the 80km Manchester to Liverpool marathon, but the result was later overturned by data from a running and cycling app. It turned out that the athlete covered about 4 km of distance by car. The 47-year-old’s case has been referred to British Athletics.

Zakrzewski, who set the 48-hour world record, admitted she made a mistake when posing for photos and accepting the trophy and medal after the race from Manchester to Liverpool. She added that after returning from Australia the night before, she was tired and unable to think straight. “I made a huge mistake accepting the trophy and I should have returned it,” she said.

British Athletics’ disciplinary committee ignored her explanation and banned her from running and training for a year, finding her guilty of breaching the athletes’ code of conduct.
