Athletistic/Others. President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov expressed hope that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will reconsider its position regarding the World Friendship Games scheduled for September 2024 in Russia. Previously, the IOC had recommended that national Olympic committees refrain from participating in these competitions.

“The Friendship Games will be a great success and will meet three objectives: the peaceful mission of sport, the free participation of all and the elimination of injustice. These objectives correspond to all the principles of the Olympic movement. Thomas Bach’s statement therefore leaves us perplexed. We hope they will reconsider their approach to the Friendship Games. Behind the veil of athletes’ interests lies a political struggle which is part of the worst traditions of totalitarian regimes. We hope that the IOC will eventually reconsider its decision and return to the principles of de Coubertin,” said Pozdnyakov, quoted by the RIA Novosti Sport agency.

Recall that the World Friendship Games are planned for Moscow and Yekaterinburg.

  • Pozdnyakov called the exclusion of Russian athletes from the Olympics a ‘sporting genocide’
