Bellew: I don’t remember the eighth round of the fight with Usyk. The referee literally saved my life then

The Ukrainian defeated Tony by knockout in 2018

Former world cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew spoke positively about his former rival, holder of the WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight titles Alexandra Usik.

“It was too hard. I’ve fought stronger and faster people. But I’ve never fought someone like him, who has everything. Alexander doesn’t create angles. He trains you, downloads what you do, like he downloads all the data in front of him, and it takes him three rounds to do it. With me it took him eight.”

“And then he does it, he pulls the trigger. I was exhausted. I remember everything up to the seventh round and I don’t remember the eighth round. Thank God the referee didn’t let me continue because he would have killed me. The referee literally saved my life.”

Usik met Bellew in 2018 in a fight for the world cruiserweight titles. The Ukrainian won by technical knockout in the eighth round. After the fight, Bellew announced his retirement from his professional career.

In his last fight, WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight title holder Usyk defeated Briton Daniel Dubois. The Ukrainian knocked out his opponent in the ninth round.

In his next fight, the Ukrainian champion must fight with WBC belt holder Tyson Fury for the status of the absolute world heavyweight champion. The fight is officially scheduled for February 2024.
