Canadian swimmer admits she was under the influence of drugs at a party on the last day of the World Cup in Budapest

Canadian swimmer Mary Sophie Harvey has admitted to being under the influence of drugs at a party marking the end of the FINA World Championships in Budapest.

At the tournament, 22-year-old Harvey won a bronze medal with the national team in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

– The last night of the World Cup, I was under the influence of drugs. At that time, I did not know what substances entered my body, I only remember that I woke up the next morning completely lost. Next to my bed were the leader of our team and the doctor. I remember celebrating bronze at Worlds, but at the same time being cautious and aware of my next goal, the Commonwealth Games. Then I don’t remember anything. A period of four to six hours that I no longer remember. I heard passages and fragments of people, while experiencing condemnation.

Finally, I went to the hospital, where I was welcomed by doctors and psychologists. The specialists said that in a way I was lucky to have escaped with dislocated ribs and a small concussion.

The only thing I can say is this – I have never been so ashamed. I’m still afraid to think of the uncertainty of that night. I’m ashamed of what happened and I think I will always be ashamed,” Harvey wrote on social media.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) said an independent investigator would work to investigate the incident.

FINA is aware of the disturbing media reports regarding Mary Sophie Harvey and is deeply concerned about her health. We are in contact with the Canadian Swimming Federation and the local organizing committee. In 2021, FINA took far-reaching action to protect athletes, and an independent investigator will be appointed to investigate the matter further, the organization said in a statement.
