The mentor is confident that the UEFA Youth League matches will be an invaluable experience for his young players
Head coach Rukha U-19 Sergei Zadorozhny commented on his team’s victory over Midtjylland (1:0) in the return match of the second round UEFA Youth League.
“Today the team played much better and more aggressively and fulfilled all the instructions for the fight. Unlike the first match, in this match Rukh played collective football, which is why the results in these two games are so different.”
“The guys had to play against a good opponent, because Midtjylland showed itself well in this confrontation. Football players must gain experience and test themselves against the backdrop of a powerful European team. Today Rukh’s players have proven that they can play exciting football and can be competitive at this level.”
“We had enough chances to score more goals and qualify for the next stage of the European Cup. However, the opponent also had several opportunities at our goal – we need to work on these mistakes. This match showed that it was difficult for Ruch to play in a positional attack, because the main threat at the Midtjylland goal was created when our players won the fight, had space, and ran into counterattacks.”
“If we summarize our performance in the current European Cup campaign, the instability of the youth has had an impact. As the match in Denmark showed, we could have played better in the first match and forced the opponent to fight so that it would have been a more acceptable result. However, this is an important experience for the players, and they will greatly benefit from these matches in the UEFA Youth League.”
Let us remind you that in the first match, nominally at home, Rukh lost to the opponent from Denmark with a score of 0:4, and the Ukrainian youths conceded three goals after the break. Taking into account this result, the return match was a matter of prestige for Zadorozhny’s players, and the Rukh boys managed to snatch victory in the last minutes of the match thanks to a goal from Vitaly Kholod.
However, in terms of the total number of matches, Rukh U-19 lost to its Danish peers and ended its performance in the Champions Path UEFA Youth League.
