1991 Ballon d’Or winner Papin leads Marseille’s youth team

The legendary forward played for Olympic from 1986-92

Marseilles announced the appointment Jean-Pierre Papin for the post of head coach of the youth team. Details of the agreement with the 1991 Ballon d’Or winner have not been disclosed.

Papin played for Marseille between 1986-92. Together with the team, he became a finalist in the 1990/91 European Cup. Also, the ex-striker of the French national team won the Champions League (Milan, 1994), the UEFA Cup (Bavaria, 1996) and won the championships of France and Italy.

During his coaching career, 60-year-old Papin led such French clubs as Bassin d’Arcachon, Strasbourg, Lens, Chateauroux and S’Chartres.

Marseille also confirmed the appointment of ex-Bayern and Juventus player Mehdi Benatia to the post of sporting director of the club.

Marseille is in 12th place in Ligue 1. Olympique will host Rennes on December 3.
