“The Tokyo 2020 Olympics would never have happened without the participation of Shinzo Abe. He fulfilled the Olympic dream of many athletes around the world.
Japan has lost a major political figure, and the IOC has lost a devoted ally and dear friend of the Olympic family. On behalf of the IOC, I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family, friends and all the Japanese people.
Along with the entire Olympic Movement, I express our infinite respect and gratitude to Shinzo Abe. Therefore, we will always honor his memory,” Bach said in a statement posted on the IOC’s official website.
Recall that on July 8, Shinzo Abe was wounded by two bullets while delivering a campaign speech near Yamato-Saidaiji station in Nara, Nara prefecture. Later, the politician died in hospital.
