Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Oleg Matytsin believes that within the framework of the sanctions of international federations, it is necessary to focus on holding national competitions, noting that it is planned to organize a Grand Prix in figure skating and gymnastics.
The first stage of complex international swimming, diving and synchronized swimming competitions of the Friendship Games will be held in Kazan from July 19 to August 3.
– You said that a model similar to the Friendship Games can be applied in other sports. What are they planning to use it for?
I will not name now. We are planning a Grand Prix, in particular, in figure skating and gymnastics. This model is very important, important for the development of the regions. The attention of the regions is great, the attention of the public is great. There is now a unique opportunity to see our athletes. I would focus on internal competition. We have a lot of people involved in all kinds of sports. By the way, skiing and biathlon are also part of these competitions. If this happens, then only for good.
Look, many country models for sports development are not internationally oriented at all. Take the NHL, the NBA. They live and grow, and are among the strongest. We have nothing to prove to anyone. We are a self-sufficient country with a large number of people involved in sports. We just need to change our mentality a bit. By organizing such formats with the support of parent committees, regions, I think there will be good results,” Matytsin told reporters.
