figure skating coach Alexander Zhulin told RT that when preparing athletes for competitions, he keeps in mind the likelihood of admitting Russians to the World Cup.
– Russian skaters will most likely have to spend this season inside the country. Isn’t there a temptation to try to go beyond the rules in the programs?
– What’s the point? You can of course take risks in the choice of music, a few other things, but overall you still have to keep in mind all the technical requirements: pieces, key points. Another question is that we have to come up with new formats like the show jumping championship. There are many options. The main thing is that all this is interesting for athletes and does not slip into some kind of nonsense. But personally, I always keep the World Cup in my head. I really hope we get the chance to go.
At the moment, Russian skaters are suspended from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
The 2023 World Figure Skating Championships will take place in Saitama, Japan from March 20-26.
