“I’m just glad I was able to stand.” Figure skater Malinin talks quadruple axel in ISU Grand Prix short program

American figure skater Ilya Malinin spoke about his impressions of his performance in the short program at the ISU Grand Prix Final, which takes place in Beijing (China).

Malinin received 106.90 points for the rental. The 19-year-old skater was the first in history to perform a 4.5-lap clean Axel during a short program.

– I feel good! I am happy to have been able to perform a quadruple axel for the first time in a short program. It wasn’t my best short program, but I’m just happy I was able to do it under pressure and stay on my feet.

All the incredible skaters here, it was a real challenge. It’s just amazing that I was able to compete with these guys and survive,” Malinin said, as quoted by the press service of the International Skating Union.

On Saturday, December 9, the men will present their free program.

Malinin was born in the United States to the family of Russian figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov. They performed at union and Russian tournaments, and then represented Uzbekistan.
