Olympic diving champion Ilya Zakharov commenting on the statement of the International Olympic Committee (CIO ) about the admission of Russian athletes to the 2024 Games in Paris, said that in this situation it is necessary to take into account security issues, which no one guarantees.
The IOC announced Friday that it will allow Russian athletes who have successfully completed qualifying events to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics on an individual, neutral basis.
— Now there is the question of selection for these Games, which is theoretically still possible, but which will be very, very difficult to achieve. And I’m also very concerned about the security issue. Are we assured of this?
— Some teams participate in the World Championships in neutral status.
— There aren’t many examples like this. Plus, after all, the Olympics are a much more global event than any world championship.
— Belarusian swimmers went to the World Cup and their colleagues asked: “Guys, why haven’t you competed for two years?
“I’ll only be truly happy if everything goes well, really.” But the security problem remains very serious. I’m worried about the guys,” Zakharov told .
At the end of March 2023, the IOC announced recommendations for the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. These include individual admission, neutral status, banning participation in team sports, and banning participation of athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the SVO. The same requirements now apply to the Olympic Games.
Previously, the IOC Executive Committee suspended the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). In Paris, Russian and Belarusian athletes can only compete in neutral individual status (AIN), without flags, anthems and other national symbols.
The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
