Coach of the 2020 Olympic pole vault silver medalist Angelique Sidorova Svetlana Abramova told that the exclusion of Russians from international tournaments influenced the athlete’s decision to end her career.
On Friday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced it would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympics to benefit from neutral status as individual athletes. Later, the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics), Sebastian Coe, said that Russian athletes would not participate in athletics competitions at the Paris Olympics.
On Saturday, Sidorova, 32, announced her retirement.
– Of course I know, the decision was joint. There was no point in continuing, that’s life. If there was no suspension, a lot of things could have happened differently,” Sidorova told .
Sidorova won silver at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and gold at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. In September, the athlete became a mother.
