Vernyaev on the war in Ukraine: I expected a different reaction from some Ukrainian colleagues

The athlete is actively involved in volunteering

2016 Olympic champion in gymnastics Oleg Vernyaev spoke about the changes in his life after the military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

“My attitude towards colleagues (Russian and some Ukrainian) has changed, because I expected a different reaction. But there was no support. Only foreign athletes – from France, Germany, the USA, from all countries – write and help both financially and morally, ”said Vernyaev.

“The war changed my life a lot. Instead of training, we volunteer, help people, collect everything we can and send it to Kharkiv. My father, my friends – we all help together as much as we can. Now there is a little more time for training, but at the very beginning of a full-scale war, we did not train at all, because there was no time for that.”

Vernyaev won the gold of the 2016 Games in the uneven bars and became the silver medalist of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the all-around. Last summer, the gymnast was disqualified for four years due to meldonium found in the body.

Early on the morning of February 24, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia continues for the 136th day.
